Guide to a NYC Commuter

Hi, welcome to the first post of my upcoming Blog. In this post I will be explaining some ways to make sure that you have a successful commute in New York City, where trains and walking are the most popular ways to travel places.

I am going to begin by telling you that I commute to NYC for school using the local train stop in my town. This train stop takes me to Hoboken after passing many other local stops. After Hoboken, I transfer to The Path which takes me to the World Trade Center, which is a 10 minute walk from campus. I do this twice a week for this semester, and I did it three times a week last semester. There have been many times where things go wrong, so below I will share some tips on how to avoid stressful commutes.

  1. WTC
    1. ALWAYS check train times the night before. I know that this is a simple one, but some days you can be taken by surprise by the times that have been switched, or how little options there are for that day.
  2. 2. Check the weather… always! New York is all about walking, and if you are walking through the streets with no umbrella, no one is going to feel bad or offer you one most of the time because New York is also a very independent city. Always keep an umbrella with you, and make sure you always have on the right shoes, and the right outfit to match the weather!
  3. 3. DO NOT freak out if you forgot something (especially as a commuter) Sure its aggravating, but most professors are very understanding towards commuters, and everyone has always forgotten something. Most of the time it is not worth going back home and missing your train.
  4. 4. Always and I mean always check your seat on the subway before AND after you get on it or off it. You never know what you could sit on (in my case what I was hoping was a pile of water) and you never know if you accidentally left your wallet, or anything on your seat.
  5. 5. Try to pack your bag, and outfit the night before. This tip goes for many scenarios, but as a commuter, time is our best friend, and you don’t want to miss a train because you couldn’t figure out what top to wear.
  6. 6. Make sure you have a Transit app downloaded onto your device. They update extremely often on where you can get the best train times to fix your schedule. It makes commuting very easy, and keeps you on time for everything.
  7. 7. Bring your charger! Your phone charger, laptop charger, any charger that you have, you are going to want to bring. Going to school it might be a bit easier to have access to a charging station; however you do not want to have to find an Apple store to charge your phone in the middle of your day.

I hope these tips are useful for your next commute. Safe travels!
